Read up on our unit in that official French army history that starts with the RCAs. At the time of the Armistice 4RCA had 2 motorcycle squadrons (with MG equipped sidecars), 2 armored car squadrons, and 1 D1 squadron that may have been handed over to the Italians. 4RCA apparently fought on after our big battle but was largely destroyed and indeed was moved over as an armored unit under a training command. I'll get you more after I translate the relevant articles.

Holy freaking cow, a casual shot at the web yielded our Holy Grail- what the heck happened (kind of) at our Bastogne, the battle of Medjez el Bab.

Haven't translated it all, but I've got enough to know that the CO running the Tunis forces in the battle literally was the first fired and noted by name as the first ArFr CO to be fighting Allied after the Torch landings!

I knew he had the Tunis airfield under 4RCA guns but was ordered not to fire, but still it's cool.

Other then a specific entry re: clearing out the fallschirmjagers (hot diggity, we beat the paras! was wondering about the 5th Fall vs. 4RCA bit) and digging ATG positions and the D1s not a lot about what caused 4RCA to be so decimated it became the training command.

Did some more translating, and now it looks like I may know what happened to the I Battalion armored cars and the 7th squadron D tanks- they may have been plastered by 23 Stukas. Certainly a lot of vehicles got it.

Oh don't worry, the airfield got camped later by 17 Stuarts and the Germans lost all 23 Stukas and 14 109s, it's here in this link-

This appears to be a history of all three phases of the battle for that town as part of a proposal for a museum or exhibit for a museum.

So an orbat, scratch allied force against 1 full and two half-strength Kompanies (the 5th Fallschirmjagers 4eRCA engaged earlier according to the other website?)and 8 88s.

There are some discrepancies, for instance the other website says it's British paras.

More importantly, the 4e RCA unit is II Battalion, one of the horse units. Given the talk in the other website of 4e RCA helping to dig pits for American 37mm AT guns this makes sense, but begs the question where are the other two battalions and 7th squadron with the D tanks?

A 16h30 l’assaut allemand a été brisé, pour une résistance farouche et des contre attaques de la part des français.

III.1.3.2 Un effort pour rien : Cette action défensive des français, n’avait pas été exploitée à bon escient. En effet l’attitude des troupes alliées, sur estimant la force de l’adversaire, avaient décidé de reculer leur position de 12 kilomètres, laissant un terrain chèrement défendu. LIDELL-HART écrivait à ce propos : « les commandements alliés eurent le sentiment de ne pas pouvoir tenir, à moins de recevoir de nouveaux renforts, et les instructions du Général K. ANDERSON empêchaient tout secours de ce genre tant que la concentration alliée en vue de l’avance sur TUNIS n’était pas achevée ». Ainsi s’achève cette première bataille par une action glorieuse des forces françaises à MEDJAZ-EL-BAB contre les Allemands, mais sans lendemain, à cause du manque de mordant des allies qui se replièrent sur OUED EZARGA. Le 20 Novembre 1942 à 11 heures, remarquant l’absence des alliés, les Allemandsoccupèrent MEDJAZ-EL-BAB et les deux rives de la MEDJERDA, mais pas pour longtemps.

So in essence horse cav 4eRCA kicks butt but gets hurt in the process and then is ordered to pull out anyway Figures....
